I started in emergency medicine at 16, as a lifeguard. From there it was wilderness paramedic, Air Force Reserve flight medic, a pediatric hospital operating room, OB/GYN, and fifteen years as a clinical coordinator in an oncology practice. Twenty-plus years of taking care of people.
Somewhere in there I got really good at taking care of everyone else and really bad at taking care of me. Burnout followed. I'm a survivor of it, and I'm not going back.
